The Critical Role of Dog Handlers
"The purpose of the picker is to locate and retrieve all game downed by the guns. A lost bird is a disservice to the shoot and disrespectful to the game bird. Retrievers must be outstanding game finders used to push deep into cover or timber and search thoroughly with exceptional scent work. Steadiness is imperative... no picker or dog shall interfere with the shoot. Good tracking skills for wounded birds are extremely important. Following each of the 6 daily drives, several dogs are left to sweep the grounds by quartering/searching for birds not retrieved. The goal... every bird hit is recovered for the gun." - Michael Stewart
