SYC Adventures: A Few Days in the Sun
What a difference a few days in the warm sun, with long days, an inviting pool, wonderful shooting, great people, great food and great wines, can make. The two weeks I spent in Argentina in late February and early March were really enjoyable, with the only negative to the time there being the devastating earthquake in Chile. While the quake did not do anything to us in Argentina, it did reek havoc on flights back to the US, and everyone was scrambling for a few days to get home. We also had to deal with lost luggage and delayed guns to an extent I have never seen in over 20 years of going to Argentina.
Weather wise, while the first few days were hot and humid, the next stretch of about 7 days was picture perfect with highs in the 70’s during the days and lows around 60 at night. This, of course, was late summer there, and those very pleasant days had the touch of Fall that will be occurring in Argentina as we experience Spring here. What a change from the rough winter weather here in the US. I love Argentina.
We continue to have great shooting at El Cortijo and are gearing up for the Fall duck, pigeon, and perdiz hunting starting in June. We have been able to find some good pigeon hunting near Cordoba so if you have an extra day to add to your schedule and want to hunt pigeons, there is a good chance we can make that happen. We still, of course, have fabulous pigeon shooting in the Cordoba Mountains for the pigeon aficionado. We have added a new lodge to our duck hunting area, Irupe, and I believe duck hunters will find it to be a first class resort catering to the duck hunter. Please explore these great venues on the web at www.sycsporting.com.
We have had a busy few months here in 2010, having hosted Gil and Vicki Ash of OSP Shooting School www.ospschool.com and their wing shooting seminar;
Tom Knapp (www.TomKnapp.net , star of Benelli’s American Bird Hunter, and his Show and Tell Seminar for 20 hunters; and the GRITS (Girls Really In To Shooting), an all women’s group headed up by Elizabeth Lanier, an instructor and world class shooter, www.laniershootingsports.com , who hosted 14 women on a great shoot/hunt as well.
In the coming months–
Bill Kempffer, Level 3 Instructor, The Southern Side by Side event host, and owner of Deep River Sporting Clays is hosting a shooting/teaching seminar in June, June 20th – 23rd to be exact. This is a three day, hands on, teaching/shooting seminar at El Cortijo Lodge. Contact Bill at 919-774-7080 and join in for an incredible shooting adventure, or be at the Southern Side by Side April 22nd-25th, and Bill or I one can answer all your questions.
Bruce Scott, television star of The Shotgun Journal, is hosting his own seminar June 24th – 27th for women (and men) shooters of all ages and experience. Bruce is an avid shooter, a great instructor and the inventor of the ‘eye cam’, which allows someone to ‘see’ what a shooter sees during the target acquisition, lead, and firing. He has a myriad of instructional tapes and DVD’s at his Sunrise Productions website. Check them out. This should be an informative and exciting event. You can reach Bruce at 800-862-6399.
Rhys Arthur, Level 3 Instructor, marvelous shooter, all around gentleman, and a staple at Prince George’s County Trap and Skeet Club here in theWashington area, is coming August 27th – 30th, for 3 days of high volume shooting with some of the Washington areas finest shooters. Be a part of this great event by contacting Rhys at 301-641-1531 and tell him to count you in.
Dez Young and Karenanne will be hosting a Wine and Dove Tour, September 18th - 26th for couples who want to sample the best that Mendozawine country has to offer, and enjoy the incredible high volume shooting at El Cortijo Lodge. One week of the finest Argentina has to offer, hosted by a genuine, quality, first class couple, who also happen to be our friends. I am putting the finishing touches on the write up for Dez, and we will be sending it to our mailing lists very soon. Look for it, contact us, and mark you calendars for September. Dez can be reached at dez.young@worldnet.att.netfor the particulars.
Anthony Matarese, (A.I.M. Shooting School – www.clayshootinginstruction.com ) who came with me in December, 2009, is returning in November of this year with his own teaching style. Anthony arrives November 10th for those of you interested in joining with and learning from a world champion who will bring his skills to the dove fields of Argentina. The weather should be beautiful, and there will be unbelievable numbers of birds at that time. You can reach Anthony via email at huntmore16@hotmail.com for all the details, or just call me and join us.
Check out the video gallery on our website (Gil and Vicki, Tom, Anthony, and the GRITS are all there - page 2). Also check out the testimonials, and the Specials you will see from time to time – real cost savers.
